The Alex Film Society, The Glendale Historical Society, and Glendale Arts join forces to celebrate the Jewel City’s unique contribution to Hollywood, its studios, and the stars that called Glendale their home, featuring vintage film clips, newsreels, silent film classics, comedy shorts, and classic cartoons. Hosted by radio personality, actor, and humorist Adam Felber, the show will also screen Chuck Workman’s Oscar®-winning salute to the movies, feature special guests, and highlight the many movie theatres on Brand Boulevard during its heyday.

The Silent Spot:

The great stars, the thrills, the laughter and the heartbreak of Hollywood’s silent era. Film accompanist, Cliff Retallick, demonstrates the musical cues that thrilled audiences before sound was invented. Relive the best moments from Valentino’s The Son of the Sheik (1926), Fairbank’s Robin Hood (1922) and Clara Bow in Wings (1927).

The Sound Era:

Vintage newsreels, travelogues, a visit with the stars “at home”, and short subjects that provide a backdrop for Glendale-centric history and personalities: Marion “Duke” Morrison, the Glendale High grad who found fame as John Wayne, and Clarence “Ducky” Nash, who immortalized the voice of Donald Duck, entertaining the kids at Fremont Elementary School.

Theatres on Brand:

Relive matinees at The Capitol, Temple, Vogue, Cosmo, Roxy, The Glendale, theatres that live only in memory. Imagine a young Elizabeth Taylor sitting nervously with her mother at the Alex in 1945 for a preview of National Velvet (1944) and Bing Crosby waiting in the lobby for a verdict on Going My Way (1944).

Our Master of Ceremonies: Adam Felber of Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!

In addition to being a regular panel member (and occasional guest host) of the popular NPR radio quiz show, Adam Felber is an American political satirist, author, radio personality, actor, and humorist. His television writing credits include Real Time with Bill Maher, Talkshow with Spike Feresten, Arthur, The Smoking Gun, and Wishbone. He and Paula Poundstone co-host the podcast Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone, a comedic advice show.

The Alex Film Society (AFS) is an all-volunteer, nonprofit community arts organization dedicated to preserving our film heritage through screenings at Glendale’s historic Alex Theatre. Since 1994, the Alex Film Society has presented classic film programs at the Alex. Archival 35mm prints, celebrity guests, historical exhibits, classic cartoons, newsreels, and rare short subjects are hallmarks of AFS events. AFS is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019.

The Glendale Historical Society (TGHS) was formed in 1979 when a group of citizens banded together to save the much beloved Victorian Doctors House from the wrecking ball. The membership-driven, non-profit organization continues in that spirit by creating awareness of Glendale’s history and architectural heritage and the need to preserve this rich legacy through advocacy, outreach and education. TGHS is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2019.

Glendale Arts (GA), a private, non-profit performing arts organization, was formed by the City of Glendale to manage the operations of the Alex Theatre. The mission of Glendale Arts is to integrate the arts into the identity, growth and economic vitality of the City of Glendale by presenting programming and creating partnerships that benefit youth, patrons, artists, organizations and businesses in the community and at the Alex Theatre.
