Founded in 1994, the Alex Film Society (AFS) is an all-volunteer resident company at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale, California.

Our multi-faceted mission:

• Foster an appreciation for the art form and history of motion pictures
• Illustrate the importance of film preservation
• Perpetuate and enhance the motion picture presentation capabilities of the Alex Theatre
• Highlight the role the Alex played in relation to the motion picture industry in Southern California as a major preview house
• Screen classic film events at the Alex at least six times per year

In November 1994, the AFS made its debut at the newly-restored Alex Theatre with several sold-out screenings of Gone with the Wind. Since that auspicious start, AFS has established a number of enduring annual events, including an annual Vaudeville Show in September (2001-2010); Classic Halloween in October (since 1995); The Three Stooges® Big Screen Event! the Saturday after Thanksgiving (since 1998); and The Greatest Cartoons Ever! immediately after Christmas (since 2010).

For more than twenty-five years, AFS has presented a significant roster of top Hollywood talent on the Alex Theatre’s stage. Film critic Leonard Maltin has been a frequent guest host, joining a guest list that has included Charlton Heston, Ann Rutherford, Ann Miller, Virginia Mayo, Richard Fleischer, Nancy Olson, Martin Landau, Jack O’Halloran and Illeana Douglas.
