AFS Events at Film Week Glendale 10/4/22 Film Events September 18, 2022October 7, 2022 The Alex Film Society is honored to participate in Film Week Glendale, which is a sidebar of the Glendale International Film Festival, running from September 29 through October 6 at the Laemmle Glendale 5, just around the corner from the Alex Theatre in downtown Glendale. We’ve selected two outstanding films that transcend their categorization as documentaries, emerging as masterful explorations of the power of cinema to capture reality and preserve it for all time, and to create new realities that often achieve the status of myth. Both films are composed virtually entirely of footage from other films, assembled to reflect the unique vision of their respective directors. Tickets for both films are now available at the following link: Laemmle Glendale 5 Web site Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at 2:00 & 7:00 PM “THE BEST DOCUMENTARY EVER MADE ABOUT LOS ANGELES.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Los Angeles Plays Itself, Thom Andersen’s encyclopedic exploration of how Los Angeles has been depicted in movies, is as sprawling as the city itself. Featuring clips from more than two hundred films, from well-known titles like Chinatown, L.A. Confidential and Blade Runner, through ‘40s film noir to genre films like Gone in 60 Seconds and more obscure independent titles such as Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep, Andersen charts the course of motion picture history in parallel with that of the city. We've been able to secure a last-minute booking for a Betty Boop cartoon that was considered lost for decades. Discovered in an archive in Russia in 2019, and restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive with funding provided by ASIFA-Hollywood, you'll now have the opportunity to be one of the first to see it on a big theater screen. This adds another emblematic work to our tribute to Dave Fleischer. With eleven classic cartoons, informative and entertaining introductions by our animation historians, plus free parking and the opportunity to tour the Hollywood Heritage Museum at no charge, it adds up to the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon celebrating the Golden Age of Hollywood. In addition to enjoying this year's impressive lineup of classic animation from Hollywood's Golden Age, you'll also have the opportunity to visit the Hollywood Heritage Museum. And thanks to the generosity of Hollywood Heritage, you'll be able to park for free in the lot adjacent to the museum and tour the Lasky-DeMille Barn for free before our show starts at 2:00 PM. This annual holiday tradition at Glendale’s historic Alex Theatre returns on Saturday, November 27th with shows at 2:00 and 8:00 PM.
Celebrate the Alex Theatre’s 96th Birthday Film Events August 31, 2021August 31, 2021 Celebrate the Alex Theatre's 96th Birthday Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 12 PM to 5 PM Glendale Arts, the management entity for Glendale's historic Alex Theatre, is extending an invitation to their Open House at the Alex on Saturday, September 4th from 12pm-5pm to celebrate the 96th birthday of the theatre. The free event coincides with the Alex’s reopening to the public after being temporarily shuttered during the COVID crisis and the launch of its 2021/2022 season. During the self-paced celebration, you'll have the opportunity to roam throughout the historic theater, including the stage area, dressing rooms, and VIP spaces frequented by many top performers over the past 96 years. Two classic silent comedies will be screened over the course of the afternoon: Ice Cold Cocos at 12:05 PM A Mack Sennett comedy featuring Billy Bevan and Andy Clyde impersonating two ice delivery men. Directed by Del Lord, who also directed many Three Stooges® comedies. The film features the same Los Angeles public stairway used in Laurel & Hardy's The Music Box. Buster's Mix Up at 3:43 PM Just one of the forty-nine films in the Buster Brown comedy series. Pal the Wonder Dog steals the show away from the human performers.
