Double Indemnity – Saturday, July 26 Film Events July 3, 2025 The third season of our Summer series of monthly screenings under the stars got off to a great start with the showing of Disney's Lady and the Tramp - and the impressive turnout included a large number of dogs in the audience - see a photo of the early crowd below. Up next on July 26: Billy Wilder's definitive film noir classic from 1944. Double Indemnity, starring Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson, with a screenplay by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, adapted from the novel by James M. Cain. Few films arrive with such an impressive pedigree, and Double Indemnity has only improved over time. If you've already seen it, take the opportunity to watch with fresh eyes and focus on the amazing B&W cinematography by John F. Seitz, and Edith Head's slinky costumes for Stanwyck. The series continues on Saturday, August 23. Instead of presenting one great MGM musical, we'll show favorite sequences from virtually ALL of them in 1974's That's Entertainment!. The series will conclude on September 27 with Blake Edwards' The Pink Panther Strikes Again from 1976, with Peter Sellers returning as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau. These outdoor screenings will be presented on the expansive lawn of the historic Doctors House in Brand Park. Admission is free. Gates will open at 6:00 PM to allow time for picnicking and socializing before the program begins at 7:30 PM. Classic Films Under the Stars – 2025 Film Events May 25, 2025June 22, 2025 The third season of our Summer series of monthly screenings under the stars in Glendale's Brand Park commences Saturday, June 28th with Walt Disney's animated classic from 1955, Lady and the Tramp, the first animated feature produced in Cinemascope. Peggy Lee not only provided voices for several characters, but also co-wrote all of the songs, and sang three of them. We'll start the evening with Chuck Workman's Oscar-winning short, Precious Images, an unforgettable assembly of close to 500 clips, summarizing the history of American film - in a very concise eight minutes. Disney’s Pinocchio – 6/8/24 Film Events May 6, 2024July 3, 2024 Classic Films Under the Stars Disney's Pinocchio on Saturday, June 8 The second season of our Summer series of monthly screenings under the stars in Glendale's Brand Park commences Saturday, June 8th with Walt Disney's animated musical classic from 1940, Pinocchio. The second of Disney's animated features, coming three years after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the film won two Academy Awards – Best Original Score and Best Original Song – "When You Wish Upon a Star," which remains an integral part of the Walt Disney Company's branding to this day. The story of a wooden marionette brought to life by the Blue Fairy and offered the chance to become a human boy if he demonstrates that he can be brave, truthful and selfless is a message that still resonates today. Glendale based animation producer/director and AFS Board Member Frank Gladstone will introduce this program with insights into the production and the artists that worked on the film, several of whom lived in Glendale. The series continues on Saturday, July 13 with film noir classic Crime Wave, featuring several scenes shot on the streets of 1954 Glendale, and concludes on August 3 with 1963's lively musical Bye Bye Birdie, featuring Dick Van Dyke, Janet Leigh and a radiant Ann-Margret – plus Ed Sullivan and Paul Lynde. Classic Films Under the Stars – 2024 Film Events April 1, 2024May 30, 2024 Coming this summer - we're back for a second season of Classic Films Under the Stars, presented on the expansive lawn of the Doctors House in Glendale's Brand Park. Mark your calendars for these three Saturday evenings: Walt Disney's Pinocchio on June 8; the Film Noir classic Crime Wave on July 13; and Bye Bye Birdie on August 3.
